DIY Reusable Cotton Pads Tutorial

If you have been stressing out about eco friendly gifts for special occasions, this is something you can do at home.

Save up to 1,460 cotton pads from going to landfills each year.

That's 14,600 in10 years, 43,800 in 30 years, per person.

4,380,000 will be for 100 people

It makes a wonderful conversation starter about climate change, it's a thoughtful gift that's gentle on your pocket as well.

Things you need

A decluttered pouch
Scrap fabric
Needle and thread

Choose from your decluttered cloth stash, it can be a stretched old T shirt that can't be resold, an extra face mask or a bit of leftover scrap from craft projects.

I found these two.

I figured on average it takes about 4 cotton pads per day, you need 20 for 5 days, 28 for 7 days.

Try to track your own usage and make a gauge.

I have an extra face mask since I switched to WFH part time, one mask will make eight pieces.

Sometimes, it's not that we buy extra, not everyone is decluttering duplicates. It's that sudden changes such as these can mean it becomes accidental clutter.

It's a misconception that clutter is always due to over consumption, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't.

Even the most conscious consumer will have some clutter for sure, things are often useful at some point, then it isn't. This is when we can use creativity to repurpose it to something useable, keep it in use instead of buying new.

I'm just about to run out of my stash of disposable cotton pads so I'm forever converting to reusables. I already use handkerchiefs, reusable straws and reusable take out containers.

I have been shopping primarily preloved for close to 2 decades as well.

Now I'm doing more for the middle R, reuse.

Cut in the middle to flatten the mask, then quarter each side

Stitch around it to reinforce

You can use an existing disposable cotton pad as a guide

Mark and cut

Repeat the steps above

Declutter a pouch and put it in, add a decluttered trinket if you have one. I made a bird bookmark from scrap fabric, so I used that, making it two upcycled gifts in one.

20 pads as a gift is a nice number, I reckon most people will use at least 20 per week.

I put the used ones inside a repurposed food glass jar, then wash them once a week.

I use them for toner and make up removal.

Thank you for saving 43,800 cotton pads from going to landfills
